Manyonga Injury Not SeriousPublished by
South African Long Jumper Luvo Manyonga's Injury from Stockholm Diamond League Meeting Not Serious Says AgentBy Adam Kopet, DyeStat Editor Luvo Manyonga has been the best long jumper in the world this season, but all of that could have come crashing down Sunday at the Stockholm Diamond League meeting with an injury sustained on his final jump. However, according to Manyonga's agent, Lee-Roy Newton, in a statement for Super Sport, the injury does not appear to be serious. "At this stage, I will certainly hesitate to use the word injured," Newton said. "I have spoken to him afterwards and although he is in slight pain I am confident that it is nothing serious." The 26-year old will be further evaluated when he returns Wednesday to Pretoria, South Africa, his home training base. The injury appeared to occur during the landing on Manyonga's final jump, the last of the competition. He remained sitting at the far end of the pit clutching his ankle or shin. Manyonga won the long jump Sunday with his opening jump of 27-5.25 (8.36m). He owns the top four jumps in the world this year and six of the top 10. His world-leading jump of 28-4.5 (8.65m) was set at altitude in Potchefstroom at the South African National Championships. He captured the silver medal at the Rio Olympics last year. Fellow South African long jumper Rushwal Samaai finished second in Stockholm with a leap of 27-2.5 (8.29m). |
